The SU-76 was based on the lengthened chassis of the T-70 light tank and featured a dual-purpose 76.2mm ZiS-3 field gun in an open superstructure. It was used as an assault gun, to provide ranged support (at maximum elevation it could fire up to 17km), and also against enemy tanks – a highly versatile all-round vehicle.
The SU-76 was a remarkable weapon that was produced in greater numbers than any other Soviet armoured vehicle aside from the T-34. It was both loved and hated by its crews who referred to it as the Suka – ‘bitch’ –because its thin armour and open top made it vulnerable while its low ground pressure and light weight made it manoeuvrable. The SU-76M proved a match for light and medium armoured German tanks but struggled as thicker armoured tanks like the Panther emerged as the war drew on.
A small number of SU-76s were captured and utilised by South Korea following the landings at Inchon.
In Bolt Action
The ZiS-3 gun of the SU-76M shares the strengths of the equivalent infantry-operated divisional gun. As such in Bolt Action, the SU76 can be upgraded with the capability of firing the weapon either as a howitzer or a medium anti-tank gun. This gives the vehicle a fantastic level of versatility in games of Bolt Action.
