August’s Soldier of Fortune figure has been ‘to Hell and back’, and arrives with a truly legendary combat record, plus the decorations to prove it - introducing Audie Murphy!
The most highly decorated US frontline soldier of the Second World War, Murphy would manage to be awarded every single medal the US issued for valour, and go from falsifying his age to enlist in the Army, to finishing the war an officer and bonafide hero.
Murphy would first be sent to North Africa, before seeing his first action in the invasion of Sicily. He would fight on through the mainland campaign, taking part in the liberation of Rome, and would then participate in the oft-forgotten invasion of southern France, where he would win the Distinguished Service Cross. From there, his adventures took him through France, where he would win two Silver Stars and a battlefield commission - as well as multiple wounds.
As a company commander in the Colmar Pocket in 1945, he would earn the Medal of Honor for a heroic solo stand. When his position came under attack from a large German force, he mounted a burning M10 tank destroyer, manning its .50cal machine gun to lethal effect while his company withdrew to a more defensible position. Despite the flames, wounds sustained, and the vastly superior enemy numbers, he continued to lay down effective fire, and only withdrew when the gun ran out of ammunition.
After the war, Murphy became an actor - even playing himself in an autobiographical film - as well as a poet and songwriter. He would die in a plane crash at the age of 45, but his legacy remains to this day.
Our Soldier of Fortune figure depicts Audie Murphy as he appeared on a poster for To Hell and Back, the film based on his memoirs, in which he played himself. Toting a captured German MG 42, he’s a great addition to any US Bolt Action force, as well as being a great opportunity for painters to recreate the original image.
Audie Murphy’s a busy man, and it’s a long way to Hell and back, so he’ll only be available for the month of August. After that, the silver screen awaits, and he won’t be available again for many years to come!
